Field notes indexes and reference maps, ca. 1857-1861.

Volume appears to have been kept by the Surveyor General's office as a reference tool. Two sets of indexes are included: one for the FEDERAL LAND SURVEYORS' FIELD NOTES (RS 953.005) and one for the copies of the field notes prepared in 1857 (RS 953.006). Volume also contains several Illinois maps delinerating the ten land district boundaries; magnetic meridian variations from the true meridian; Illinois counties; and townships reserved for the Illinois Central Railroad.

Federal land surveys in Illinois were authorized by Congressional act (March 26, 1804), when the U. S. Surveyor General was given jurisdiction over all public land north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi Rivers.
